In certain parts of the world, younger generations have become less inclined to attend classical music concerts or play classical music, due to the pervasiveness of contemporary pop culture. This essay will ascertain why this is the case and also why young people should be actively encouraged to attend classical music concerts and become educated about classical music.
There has been a significant decline in the amount of younger people listening to classical music, due to the widespread influence of popular culture and the fact that music has largely become commoditized. Contemporary music is essentially a product that is designed to be marketed and sold commercially, whereas in the golden ages of classical music, it was treated as a valued art form. This trend has been further exacerbated by the digital age. For example, young people can readily access and download modern pop songs and share them with their peers.
Young people should be encouraged to attend classical music concerts and learn about classical music. Firstly, there are a number of mental and emotional benefits associated with listening to classical music. Classical music has been scientifically proven to have a positive impact on the brain, improving mood and spatial reasoning, commonly known as the ‘Mozart effect’. Secondly, classical music can act as a conduit, connecting culture and traditions from the past to modern life. It represents the traditions and beliefs of previous eras and is able to bring them to life. For example, classical music which can be heard in national anthems all over the world, binds together its citizens as a symbol of tradition, which is linked to modern society.
In an age where disposable pop music and style over substance has become the norm, preserving and nurturing this atemporal genre of music is more important than ever. Younger generations should be encouraged to attend classical music concerts and learn more about classical music due to the physical, emotional and intellectual benefits it brings.
